Uber adds Lamborghinis, Maseratis to Singapore fleet

Uber's getting fast and furious in Singapore, souping up its fleet with chauffeured Lamborghinis and Maseratis as part of its new "supercar" offering.

The taxi app has teamed up with luxury car rental company DreamDrive to develop the service, which will kick off Monday on a trial basis until May 20.

A word of caution, the cost of a single ride could wipe out your whole month's taxi budget.

The base fare for cruising around town in a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder or Maserati GranTurismo Coupe is $200 and $165, respectively, in addition to a $7 a minute charge.

A dream come true?

Despite the steep rates, the service has created a buzz with Uber users in the city-state, where owning a supercar is a mere pipe dream for most.

Hefty taxes on automobile ownership make Singapore one of the most expensive cities in the world to own car.

A mid-range sedan, for example, costs north of 100,000 Singapore dollars ($73,000).

Owning a supercar is another story. A Maserati GranTurismo Sport sells for around 600,000 Singapore dollars ($437,000). In the U.S., the same car costs under $200,000.

In demand

Uber's free trial for its supercar service earlier this month was met by an encouraging response, a spokesperson from Uber told CNBC.

"Response was overwhelming and demand was sky high. Anytime the car freed up and went back online it was booked right away for the next trip. We were really encouraged by the interest levels," she said.

This is the first time Uber is offering the option to request for a supercar for an extended period. The company says it will use the trial run to monitor demand levels before ascertaining a long-term plan for the offering.
