Smart LED bulb allows programmable features with no extra hardware

LED technology has revolutionized the basic lighting needs that we've taken for granted for generations. LED lighting uses less energy than an incandescent bulb and can last up to 50,000 hours before being replaced. But a recent Kickstarter project is proposing a smart LED that can be programmed to do much more than just light up a room.

The LIFX LED bulb is wifi enabled, can be controlled from a smartphone app, and features a laundry list of programmable features including the ability to change light color, turn on or off, dim, pulse with the beat of your music, and can even be set up to notify you when you get a message on Twitter or Facebook. The best part is that there is no extra hardware required for the lightbulb to work — it screws into any conventional bulb socket.

As of the time of this post, the Kickstarter project has raised over $860,000, which blows away the initial goal of $100,000 with 57 days still left on the campaign. You can pre-order one of these bulbs for only $69 while helping the LIFX Labs folks fund their project even further.
