Plans approved for 300 homes on former Grimsby school site

Plans for more than 300 homes on the site of a former Grimsby school have been approved.

Western School closed in 2008 and the land on Little Coates Road was allocated for housing, with a roundabout built in anticipation of the development.

Developer Keepmoat said 20% of the homes would be affordable rents.

Neighbours on Sherwood Road had raised objections on traffic, ecology, flood risk and privacy grounds.

One resident said that the land was prone to flooding and he also raised concerns over increased traffic claiming that Sherwood Road had become a "rat run".

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the site will have 31 four-bed homes, 124 three-bed, 83 two-bed and 16 one-bed flats.

All will have solar panel on their roofs and there will be parking space for 649 cars and 638 bikes.

Drainage channels and a pond basin in eastern open space will be created to address any flooding issues.

The developer's agent James Pritchard told the North East Lincolnshire Council meeting: "The proposals are of high quality and will be bringing much needed housing to the area."

Councillor Henry Hudson described it as a "pretty good scheme".

"I think it would be a little bit foolish to turn this down today," he said, noting complaints often made about not using brownfield land.

As part of the scheme, £1.5m would be paid by the developer to be used to fund local education.

The project was unanimously approved.
