Do not queue early to dispose of green waste in Guernsey, the States has said.

Queues at Mont Cuet have been reported on weekend mornings due to vehicles arriving "well before the gates open" - lasting for up to an hour.

The States said although the new facility had longer operating hours, it needed to be cleared of waste from the previous day in the morning.

Douglas Button, Guernsey Waste Officer, said islanders were adjusting to the new hours.

He said: "Given it is quite a big change compared to the old site, we anticipated there might be a few issues in the early days.

"For now, we would just remind everyone that if you turn up before 10am, you could face a bit of a wait.

"If you can leave it until a bit later in the day, you are likely to avoid queuing."

The site at Mont Cuet is open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00 BST, and until 16:00 BST on weekends and Bank Holidays, excluding Liberation Day. The site is closed on Thursdays.

Guernsey Waste has applied for planning permission to extend the opening times on Saturdays and Sundays until 18:00 BST in the summer.
