How Much Should a Wedding Guest Give?
Americans spend a median $69 on wedding gifts, according to an online survey of 5,000 Americans conducted in February by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. Northeasterners spent the most: a median $102, vs. $64 for those from the Midwest and West, and $66 for those from the South. Nationwide, men said they gave $75, on average; women spent $64.
No surprise, higher earners gave more; wedding guests with household incomes of $80,000 or more gave, on average, $96. Those with incomes below $50,000 gave an average $53.
Almost half of respondents—47 percent—said they spend less than $75 on a wedding gift. An additional 15 percent said, “It depends on the wedding.”
