A supermarket worker has been left with what police called "life-changing injuries" after an accident at work.

Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation into the incident, which happened at a Lidl store in Wigan, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday.

North West Ambulance Service said it was called to the Whitworth Way shop at about 21:48 BST and a patient was taken to hospital with "a serious leg injury".

The store was cordoned off until about 11:25 on Thursday.

Wigan Council said it was investigating the workplace incident.

A Lidl spokesman said: "Our heartfelt thoughts are with [the staff member] and their family at this time.

"We are extremely thankful for the swift action taken by those on site.

"We are also grateful for the prompt response from the emergency services and are working closely with all relevant authorities, providing our full support to their investigations."
