What to expect from Google's I/O conference

The Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) I/O conference begins Thursday, and the Android faithful will hear some big updates on the tech giant's vast ecosystem.

Google's mobile operating system, Android, remains the dominant platform for the world's smartphones, despite seeing some market share disappear to Apple after the iPhone 6 launch. The updates announced at Google I/O affect millions of Android users, plus the millions who use Google's search, advertising and browser platforms.

The Web behemoth may also detail a new OS for the Internet of Things-the growing body of everyday items hooked up to the wireless Internet- according to The Information (subscription needed).

Beyond Google's flagship products and services, tech enthusiasts may also hear updates on the tech giant's so-called "moonshots"-self-driving cars and augmented reality devices integrated with Android. Google Senior Vice President of Products Sundar Pichai will give the keynote address Thursday at 12:30 p.m. PDT.

The conference takes place at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco.
