It’s the farthest thing from “Californication” you can imagine, given the Old World charm and arty furnishings of the apartment owned by ex-couple David Duchovny and Tea Leoni. Now that the residence at 170 E 78th St, New York, NY 10075 has hit the market, the final piece of the couple’s marital dissolution can be settled.
For all the fallout that took place after Leoni and Duchovny’s initial split in 2008 and their eventual divorce in 2011 — including his sex addiction, their brief reunion, her alleged dating of Billy Bob Thornton and his alleged hookup with “X-Files” co-star Gillian Anderson — their warmly-appointed apartment certainly bears the look of a solid, stable, old-school New York City dwelling. It’s fitting: Both stars are born-and-bred New Yorkers.
In 2008, Leoni put her foot down about raising the couple’s two children in Los Angeles, so they sold their Malibu home and moved back to New York. According to Leoni, Duchovny did not even know that she had bid on the Upper East Side apartment.
Listed for $9.25 million, the 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath “maisonette” was once three separate artist studios. The renovation into a single, large unit means that the apartment is 30 feet wide — a luxury in many Upper East Side buildings. Add to that 13-foot ceilings, a renovated eat-in kitchen, terrace, separate laundry room and office, and the apartment carries a truly homey quality.
