Bob Vila Radio: Humidifiers

We love the toasty warmth that our radiators and heating vents give off—but the dry indoor air that comes with all that heat can really be a drag. Not only does it cause dry skin, chapped lips, and scratchy throats, but it can also affects health, worsening asthma and causing the spread of respiratory infections. A humidifier is a great way to get some moisture back into the air.

Humidifiers increase moisture levels by emitting steam or water vapor. Warm-mist humidifiers, or steam vaporizers, use electricity to boil water and then release steam.

More common are cool-mist humidifiers, which distribute moisture through one of a variety of methods. Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to pass air through a wet filter, wick, or other device; impeller humidifiers give off a mist by means of a rotating disk; and ultrasonic humidifiers use ultrasonic vibrations to create a fine mist.

The best type of humidifier for you will depend on several factors, including the size of the room to be humidified, the amount of care and cleaning required, the size of the tank, the cost of any filters, and the amount of noise the unit makes. Whatever model you choose, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and operation instructions carefully—you don’t want your humidifier to release germs and other pollutants into your home!
