8 Easy Ways to Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa

By Pro.com

There are many ways to make your bath a refuge, a place to wash away the day’s stresses and cares and to recharge. If you’re planning on remodeling the bathroom, here are some luxurious ways to add some serenity to the most private (and what should be the most serene) space in your home.

1. Tubs

An antique or vintage tub can be an architectural focal point, and set the tone for the design for the rest of the space. If contemporary design is more your style, look for a clean-lined sculptural style. If you want to up the spa quotient, look for deep soak tubs and jets so you can whirlpool your cares away.

2. Shower

You can trick out your shower for a luxurious experience. A modern walk-in shower in the master bath with beautiful tile sets the stage for other fun and functional features like a rain-style shower head, a steam function, a hand-held shower head, or even dual shower heads with streams coming from different directions. Build in a bench and a sound system and you won’t want to leave! Gild the lily with a warming drawer or towel rack so your towels are toasty when you get out.

3. Basins

A basin can be a basic sink, but there are many options at all price points to add some pizzazz, from antique looks to sculptural lines. Some may sit atop the vanity; others may be dropped into a piece of furniture like an antique washstand or chest, adding storage and personality.

4. A Touch of Tech

You may have seen some examples of baths with a flat-screen TV above the tub. If you want to stay connected but don’t have that much space, add a shelf where you can perch an iPad and keep it away from the water. Or add a small wall-mount unit.

5. Linens

Buy the softest, thickest towels, bath mats and fluffy robes you can on your budget to feel pampered without a renovation.

6. Dim the Lights

Raise the relaxation level by using soft lighting, installing a dimmer switch or just turning the lights off and lighting a bunch of candles to set a relaxing atmosphere. Reserve bright or natural lighting for task areas like the vanity so you have the proper lighting for applying makeup and shaving.

7. Go Natural

Whether it’s using natural wood as an accent wall or simply as accessories, a touch of nature along with a compementary paint palette can immediately calm you. Bamboo accessories add a little touch of spa-like serenity to any bath. Many live plants will thrive in a higher-moisture environment of the bathroom. Votives nestled in pebbles on a shelf or on a tray bring in the relaxed feeling of the ocean.

8. Accessorize

A bath tray -- holding special soaps, scented bath salts and oils, a book, and a cup of tea or glass of wine -- brings the spa to any tub. Clear glass or apothecary jars that hold decorative soaps, cotton balls and the like can sit on a counter or vanity and enhance the airiness of your home spa.
