25 songs in a sec? AT&T launches super fast network

AT&T (NYSE: T) is pushing the broadband industry to new speeds as it launches U-Verse with GigaPower.

GigaPower looks speedy-so speedy that AT&T claims consumers could download 25 songs in less than one second and an HD TV show in just 3 seconds.

It's a 100 percent fiber optic network that's faster than dial up, DSL or cable services, according to AT&T.

AT&T launched GigaPower this week in select cities, including Cupertino, California, where Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has its headquarters. AT&T is working on rolling out in other areas where there is demand for the technology.

It costs $110 per month for Web speeds of up to 1 gigbit per second under the new fiber network, AT&T said.

AT&T says it needs to work with local leaders to make sure there are strong investment cases and receptive policies for this type of expansion.
