Oct. 23: Body Shop founder Anita Roddick was born 71 years ago

Take a look at the toiletries lining your bathtub or your medicine cabinet shelves. There's a pretty good chance you've got products labeled "not tested on animals." But when Anita Roddick founded the Body Shop line of bath products and cosmetics back in 1976, such labels scarcely existed. Her company was one of the first to ban animal testing and put social issues on the business agenda. She was a pioneer of ethical consumerism, and her actions helped change the shopping landscape by pressuring other companies to do the same.

Born on Oct. 23, 1942, she died in 2007 of a brain hemorrhage.
