It’s no Mars, but Bel Air suits Tesla’s Elon Musk just fine

2012 was good to Elon Musk. Among other achievements, his company SpaceX launched the first commercial cargo flight to the International Space Station, while his company Tesla released its first all-new electric car to rave reviews. He even unveiled an ambitious vision for a space ferry to establish a colony on Mars.

Back down on Earth, though, it appears Musk is settling in a little.

The Silicon Valley billionaire had been renting a mansion in Los Angeles' ultra-ritzy Bel Air neighborhood for three years, but he recently made his residence official by purchasing the estate, according to the SFGate.com blog On the Block.

The seven-bedroom, 13-bedroom, 20,000-square-foot estate is perched on a private knoll overlooking the Bel Air Country Club, the address's Zillow page says. The mansion is pictured here at center left; visit the Zillow page for more pictures.

Redfin records indicate that it sold on New Year's Day for $17 million.
