You paid a lot of money for your appliances, whether it’s that stainless steel refrigerator or your new air conditioner. If your warranty is still good, don’t risk causing more damage to an already faulty unit by attempting to DIY. If you do mess with covered appliances before reaching out to the manufacturer you’ll do yourself more harm than good. No warranties? Consider a general home warranty and all qualifying appliances under your roof will be covered.
Unlike homeowner's insurance—which covers theft and damage to your property caused by fires and storms—home warranties will take care of appliances and mechanical systems that might break down because of normal wear and tear. A basic policy can cost up to $500 a year and covers plumbing, electrical work, HVAC systems, and most major appliances. (Illustration: Brian Stauffer)
