Grumpy Old Men house
Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for this Saint Paul, MN home to find its way into the heart of a willing buyer.
Once it hit the market at the end of June, a plethora of news publications ran the story, igniting the already burning fan passion for the quaint home.
Built in 1914, the 1,460-square-foot 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom bungalow comes with memories of a street filled with the lifelong rivalry of “Grumpy Old Men” characters John Gustafson and Max Goldman. It is assumed that neighborly competition is not necessarily included with the home purchase.
The exterior of the home at 1133 Hyacinth Ave E, Saint Paul, MN 55106 was featured in the film, while sets at nearby Paisley Park Studios were used for the interior filming. The exterior of the home remains mostly unchanged.
Real estate agent Shane Montoya of Keller Williams‘ The Odd Couple Team has received frequent attention from media outlets and fans after taking on the listing. On the July 12 airing of Twin Cities Live (TCL), Montoya was interviewed and shown hanging up the “sold” sign. TCL reported that the deal on the house will be closing next month.
In an interview, Montoya confirmed that the home is indeed a pending sale. He added that thus far, he has gotten at least 30 to 40 calls regarding interest in viewing the house. In addition, when he “was at the home hanging a sign rider on the for sale sign, an older couple and their grandchildren stopped by and took pictures in front of the house. Their license plate said North Dakota on it.”
However, prior to the listing, the bungalow was not short of attention. “The seller has had many people over the years stop out front to take pictures” Montoya said. “Once some college-aged guys stopped by with some fishing poles and took pictures on the front lawn.”
Did the house sell so quickly because of its movie fame? Montoya said that while the movie was mentioned in some marketing materials, “we believe the buyers simply loved the home for the home itself.”
The starter home has appeal, with or without the famous history.
The interior of the home has been remodeled, with an updated kitchen and bathroom. To get the true “Grumpy Old Men” experience, owners can ice fish in picturesque Lake Phalen, visible from the home’s backyard.
