With the holidays approaching, it's easy to transform your bathroom from ordinary to festive with just a few holiday accessories. In truth, many holiday decorators tend to overlook the bathroom when preparing their home for the season. However, if you plan on entertaining, your bathroom is guaranteed to get plenty of use. Keep your holiday décor consistent throughout your home by including the festive theme in your bathroom.
Start with some holiday color.
Add the colors of the season to your bathroom by replacing your bath linens. Dress up your bathtub by adding a double swag shower curtain in red or green. Customize this upscale look by using gold tiebacks for the outer fabric curtains. Look for holiday themed bath linens at your favorite department store or find them online at stores.
If you don't want to spend extra money on the bath linens you will only use for a few weeks out of the year, look for bath towel sets in red, green or gold. An inexpensive alternative to the double swag shower curtain idea would be a simple, holiday themed vinyl shower curtain.
Look for holiday themed accessories.
Once you've added some festive holiday color with different bath linens, look for other holiday themed bathroom accessories. You can find a plethora of these items on sites like Amazon. Examples include:
- Shower curtain rings
- Toilet seat covers
- Lotion dispensers
- Soap dispensers or dishes
- Tissue box covers
- Toothbrush holders
- Waste cans
Keep the decorating theme consistent; in other words, don't mix too many different icons together such as snowmen shower curtain rings holding a poinsettia shower curtain next to a Santa toilet seat cover. If you over do it, the room will look tacky.
Add holiday scents to the bathroom.
Don't forget to make your bathroom smell good. Set out a few scented candles with scents such as pine, vanilla or cinnamon. Oil diffusers also work well in small areas such as bathrooms and you won't have to light anything to release the scent.
Display holiday themed decorative soaps near the sink for guests to use when washing their hands.
Make your own holiday bathroom décor.
You may prefer to create your own holiday bathroom décor, especially if you're into the vintage, handcrafted or primitive look in your home.
Create your own scented pine cones and display them in a rustic basket or with a few holiday candles by the sink, on a shelf or even on the back of the toilet, where their scent will be put to good use. Common holiday scents include cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, apple, orange or peppermint and you can add scent to pine cones by:
- Spray bottle - Fill a spray bottle with water and add several drops of holiday scented essential oil to the bottle. Spray the cones and seal in a plastic bag for 24 hours.
- Glue and spice - Mix equal parts glue and water in a bowl. Combine dry spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice in a large plastic bag. Use a foam brush to paint the glue mixture onto two or three pine cones and then place the cones into the spice bag. Shake well until the cones are covered. Remove after 24 hours.
- Wax dipped - Melt some paraffin wax in a double boiler or in the microwave. Add your choice of scented oil to the wax, stirring well. Let the wax cool for about five minutes and then holding the cone by the base, dip it into the wax mixture. Coat each cone in wax thoroughly and set on wax paper to dry. Store in a plastic bag to retain scent longer.
Another easy homemade holiday bathroom décor idea is to use rustic, barnwood picture frames to frame pieces of old-fashioned or vintage holiday wrapping paper. Use a hot glue gun to embellish the frame with small pieces of garland and then cut the wrapping paper to fit inside the frame. You could also use vintage Christmas cards. If your home style is modern, use sleek, silver and gold frames with shiny, metallic holiday gift wrap. Create a grouping of about three or four frames to display on your bathroom walls.
Remember to keep the style of your holiday décor consistent with the overall style throughout your home.
