Move over FiOS, you're no longer the fastest kid on the block. Broadband provider Comcast confirmed rumors today by announcing that it will begin offering an Xfinity Platinum service capable of delivering download speeds of 305Mbps (65Mbps upload), five whole megabits per second faster than previous king-of-the-hill Verizon. There are some catches to the new service, though. Xfinity Platinum will only be available in major metropolitan areas stretching from Norfolk, Virginia up north to Boston, Massachusetts. And that breakneck speed will cost you a lot — $299.95 per month.
Thankfully, there's good news here even for those unwilling to drop three Benjamins per month on internet service. Comcast is going to boost download speeds across the board for all customers in the Northeast serviced Xfinity Platinum. If you're currently enjoying their 25Mbps tier, you'll be bumped up to 50; if you're paying to download at 50Mbps, you'll see your speed more than double to 105Mbps.
