Legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer passed away on Wednesday, just ten days before his 105th birthday, leaving behind a legacy as one of the 20th century's finest architects. Obsessed with a purity of form, Niemeyer created structures that defied expectations, inspired legions of other architects, and, in the case of Brasilia, crafted a brand-new world capital out of a cleared patch of jungle. In the gallery above, find some of Niemeyer's most striking work, plus photos of his sole stateside commission, 1963's Strick House, designed by mail, thanks to his leftist political leanings.
