Happy birthday, Tord Boontje! The Netherlands-born designer turns 45 today. He's probably best known for his laser-cut "chandeliers" -- paper, metal or other materials wrapped around a light source -- which thread together naturalism, romanticism and modernism with a delicacy that belies their durability. The filigree shadows they cast are exquisite. And much of his work is surprisingly inexpensive: The chandeliers cost around $100, and a metal garland by itself (sans light) is about $30.
P.S. His last name is pronounced BONE-cheh, with a clipped last syllable. Or, anyway, that's the best written American rendering we can come up with, after watching and rewinding several different YouTube videos in which he introduces himself.
