  • Fall plantings brighten your yard decor

If your backyard is a little worse for wear after some summer entertaining, we've got some cool ideas for freshening up the look. Take some tips from our "D-I-Why Not?" video host, Jeff Meacham, and our expert guide, and go all out for colorful fall florals:

Whether you pick the pop of perennials or the pizzazz of potted plants, our guide will walk you through where to place your fall plantings for a more lovely home landscape.

Here's what you'll need for the projects:

    Plants
    Potting soil
    Garden gloves
    Garden shovel
    Garden tiller
    Mulch
    Decorative plant pots
    Watering can

Once you've decided a decorative layout of plants around your yard (making sure that no plants will overlap one another), begin digging the holes where you'll place your plants.

A plant's pot size will determine how deep and wide you need to dig. Don't overdo the digging, but create a hole at least 2" deeper than the plant's root ball, leaving room to back fill with soil. Gently work the dirt at the

  • Turn creative photo frames into ‘wow’ wall decor

With a few decorative frames, a little paint and some creativity, "D-I-Why Not?" expert Jeff Meacham helps homeowner Tiffany turn a boring, blank walk into a breathtaking work of art.

The custom photo frames are ceiling medallions made of lightweight plastic molds in many sizes and decorative scroll patterns. These medallions typically dress up ceiling lighting and fans, but we've turned them into wonderful wall treatments.

Watch the video for techniques and read our how-to below for more fun creating your unique photo frames.

    Here's what you'll need:

    Ceiling medallions
    Paint
    1/2" or 1" angled paintbrush
    Painter's tape
    Cellophane tape
    Double-sided mounting tape
    Protractor with pencil
    Craft paper
    Rubber gloves
    Scissors
    Paint drop cloth
    Selected photo prints

Here's how to make the project:

Set up your painting workspace in a well-ventilated area, such as your garage. Arrange your project materials atop a clean, dry drop cloth.

Dip a ½" or 1" angled brush lightly into the paint (avoid

  • From spare room to awesome home office

Take a clue from homeowner Katie in our "D-I-Why Not?" video, and turn a catch-all storage space into an attractive home office. Our simple steps will give you beautiful new flooring and wall treatments in a matter of hours.

    How to install laminate flooring

Today's easy snap-together laminate flooring comes in many styles to dress up a home office decor scheme, and it resists most scratches and stains. The foam backing even helps quiet your office so you can better concentrate on your big ideas.

    Here's what you'll need:

    • Tape measure
    • Straight-edge
    • Angle finder
    • Hammer
    • Level
    • Wall spacers
    • Saw with a fine-tooth blade
    • Laminate flooring

Measure the square footage of the entire floor space. Buy that much flooring material plus about 5 to 10 percent extra to allow for multiple cuts and inevitable waste.

Decorator tip: Cut the flooring planks in different lengths for visual variety and a more dramatic floor pattern.

Make sure the floor is level before you start; gaps between the old and new surfaces

  • Is Millionaire a Real Estate Tycoon … or Robin Hood?

A Michigan businessman has bought up every piece of property--fully 650 separate properties--for sale at a Macomb County tax auction for a cool $4.8 million. He was the only bidder. And not everyone was happy with that outcome, especially those who had hoped to bid on single homes.

So what does Bill McMachen plan to do with all of that windfall real estate? Sell it, of course (and he has many would-be buyers). According to Fox News, McMachen expects to make about $2 million back on his investment, with many of the properties to be donated to needy families.
